In response to heightened hygiene concerns, lighting manufacturers are incorporating anti-microbial technologies directly into luminaires, particularly for high-touch surfaces like switches and trim, as well as on diffusers in sensitive environments. These solutions use coatings or materials infused with silver ions, copper, or other compounds that inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold, and viruses on the surface. While not a replacement for regular cleaning, they provide an added layer of protection between cleanings, potentially reducing the spread of pathogens in spaces like hospitals, schools, public restrooms, and public transportation. This is part of a broader trend of «health-forward» design in building products, where lighting contributes not only to visual and circadian health but also to supporting a cleaner physical environment.
