A key barrier to retrofitting smart lighting controls is the need to run low-voltage wires to sensors and switches or to replace batteries periodically. Energy Harvesting Wireless Switches (EHWS) are solving this problem. These devices use ultra-low-power radios (like EnOcean) and contain micro-generators that convert the kinetic energy from a button press into enough electrical power to send a wireless signal to a receiver. Similarly, self-powered sensors can use small integrated photovoltaic cells to harvest energy from ambient room light. This creates a completely wire-free and maintenance-free control ecosystem, drastically reducing installation complexity and cost in retrofit projects. It enables the placement of controls and sensors anywhere without constraints, facilitating truly flexible and adaptive space design.
