LED-Based Non-Visual Applications: Skin Therapy and Biosimulation


LED technology is being leveraged for targeted non-visual biological effects. Narrow-spectrum LEDs are used in professional dermatology and home-use devices for photobiomodulation therapies to treat acne, promote wound healing, and reduce inflammation. Different wavelengths (e.g., red for collagen, blue for bacteria) are applied for specific therapeutic outcomes. Separately, research is ongoing into using specific light exposures to safely stimulate biological processes, such as enhancing vitamin D synthesis or managing jaundice in neonates. These applications decouple light from vision, using it as a precise tool for medical treatment and wellness, forming a distinct and growing sector adjacent to the general illumination industry.
